Model Building for Safe Water Supply Service by Local Government Institution
Launching Ceremony
Launching Ceremony was conducted on 16th February 2012 in Jessore DC conference room. This program was chaired by Mr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner, Jessore. 74 participants attended at this ceremony. Welcome speech, 2 presentations (baseline survey analysis and project outline) and open discussion among the participants were the main content of launching ceremony.
Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) Meeting
First JCC meeting was conducted on 16th February, 2012. This meeting was chaired by Mr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Jessore. At first, DC conformed JCC member. Seven members joined JCC meeting. Project progress and next activity plan were the content of the meeting. It was decided that next JCC meeting will be held at September, 2012 in Dhaka.
Second JCC meeting was conducted at 18thOctober, 2012 at Training Room, DPHE Head Quarter, Dhaka. Ms. Zuena Aziz, Additional Secretary, Local Government Division, ministry of Local Government Rural Development & Cooperatives, chaired the meeting. Progress and future plan of the project was discussed and approved.
Horizontal Learning Program
‘Network Workshop on Union Parishad-led Horizontal Learning Program in Bangladesh’ was held on 9th June, 2012 at PRTC, Aggragati Shangstha, Shatkhira. From the project, two staffs participated this program to disseminate digital map making technology.
‘Preparation for Thematic Workshop on WatSan’ organized by World Bank was held on17th and 18th September in Koitta Union, Manikganj Upazila. World Bank invited 3 Union chairmen of Jhikargachha Upazila among 64 Union chairmen which conducted ‘good practice’ in whole Bangladesh. 3 Union chairmen, one Pani Paridarshak and one computer operator attended the workshop and explained the outputs such as arsenic contamination and safe water device location map, safe water supply plan based on the digital map, SWD construction using LGSP fund and recruitment of Pani Paridarshak for SWD maintenance as good practices by Union Parishad.
Seminar and workshop
‘International Conference on Water Quality with special reference to Arsenic’ was held from 18th to 20th February, 2012, in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Project manager and Team leader joined the conference and presented ‘Community based Management of Safe Water Devices –Its Difficulties and Challenge–’ to explain the concept and activity of the project.
Seminar on ‘Arsenic mitigation under model building for safe water supply by local government institution (Union Parishad)’ organized by JICA was conducted in DPHE Auditorium, Dhaka at 18th October, 2012. Union chairman, Pani Paridarshak and computer operator of Jhikargachha Union participated this seminar and showed the output of the project.
Dissemination conference on ‘Arsenic Mitigation Research in Bangladesh’ was condected at 9th – 10th December, 2012 in LGED, Dhaka.Water supply engineer of this project attended this program to disseminate ‘safe water supply service’. Various Universities, NGOs and DPHE have conducted research for arsenic mitigation. The purpose of this conference was to disseminate the result of this arsenic mitigation research.
Seminar on ‘Toward comprehensive water supply and sanitation database system’ was conducted in DPHE Conference Room, Dhaka at 13 December, 2012. Information analysis of the project attended this seminar and showed the process of making and safe water supply plan.
Project site visit
The team of ‘Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project for Western Nepal’ (12 persons) visited Chowgachha and Jhikargachha Upazila on 4th and 5thJune, 2012 to observe the varieties of safe water device and its nature of usage. Project staff guided them to the site of deep tube well with moon pump, dug well sand filter, pond sand filter, arsenic iron removal plant and piped water supply system. Project engineer explained to select suitable option to the site is necessary.
